Atlanta Falcons 2010 NFL Draft Picks
Atlanta Falcons
Needs Analysis: The Falcons calmly took the best player on their board in the first four rounds. A number of prognosticators said Sean Weatherspoon was a late first-round pick, but I agree with Atlanta grabbing him at No. 19. He can play any of the three linebacker spots. Not having a second-round pick left the Falcons waiting 64 selections before getting a defensive tackle (Corey Peters). A total of 10 defensive tackles came off the board during those 64 picks. Mike Johnson, also taken in the third round, can play center as well as guard. CB Dominique Franks, taken 135th overall, looked like a steal and should compete for at least the nickel corner job. The Falcons can go to camp with this roster.
Pick Player Pos Ht Wt College Grade* Fan Pick* Watch
Round 1, Pick 19 (19) Sean Weatherspoon LB 6'1" 239 Missouri 8.3 24
Video
Pick Analysis: The Falcons address their biggest need with the addition of Sean Weatherspoon to their defense. The loquacious playmaker has exceptional speed, and has the potential to be an impact player as a weak side linebacker. Given the importance of the Will in Tampa-2 schemes, Weatherspoon is poised to play a pivotal role as a rookie.
Round 3, Pick 19 (83) Corey Peters DT 6'3" 300 Kentucky 2.5 --
Video
Pick Analysis: The Falcons add another big body to their defensive tackle rotation with the selection of Corey Peters. The Kentucky standout flashes good instincts and awareness, but isn't consistently sound or solid with his technique. Though he will need some skill refinement, Peters gives the team another hard-working player to add to the mix.
Round 3, Pick 34 (98) (Compensatory selection) Mike Johnson OG 6'5" 312 Alabama 6.1 --
Video
Pick Analysis: The Falcons pick up Mike Johnson to bolster their depth at the guard position. The instinctive interior blocker lacks exceptional size, but his toughness and relentless motor allow him to compete in a short area. While he doesn't upgrade the Falcons, he should be a solid backup for the team in his first season.
Round 4, Pick 19 (117) Joe Hawley OG 6'3" 297 UNLV 2.0 --
Video
Pick Analysis: The Falcons pick up a valuable backup with the selection of Joe Hawley. The former UNLV standout has the versatility to play any of the three interior positions, and could be a key contributor as a rookie backup.
Round 5, Pick 4 (135) (From Redskins through Rams) Dominique Franks CB 5'11" 194 Oklahoma 7.4 --
Video
Pick Analysis: The Falcons pick up a quality cover corner with the selection of Domonique Franks. He has good ball skills and awareness, and is adept at playing in zone coverage. Given the Falcons' woes against the pass in 2009, Franks could emerge as a contributor in the team's nickel or dime packages.
Round 5, Pick 34 (165) (Compensatory selection) Kerry Meier WR 6'2" 224 Kansas 2.3 --
Video
Pick Analysis: I wanted to go back and talk about this pick. The Falcons took Meier late in the fifth round. He was a former starting quarterback for the Jayhawks and was converted to wide receiver and became an incredibly productive receiver over the last few years. He has a tremendous body, good hands and a great understanding of the game. Ironically, you could have won a lot of money if you would have bet that he would run faster than teammate Dez Briscoe at the NFL Scouting Combine.
Round 6, Pick 2 (171) (From Lions) Shann Schillinger S 6'0" 199 Montana -- --
