Update on Manny Pacquiao Vs Floyd Mayweather
Greetings boxing fans, HTR’s resident boxing guru here with the first edition of “Stokester’s Soapbox Boxing Edition”. Typically I rant and rave about the happenings in the world of wrestling but I thought it fitting to bring the soapbox to the world of boxing.
In this edition, we’ll give you the latest on the Floyd Mayweather, Manny Pacquiao saga as well as look back at Miguel Cotto’s huge victory Saturday night.
So without further ado, I am officially on “The Soapbox”.
Boxer of Year…and Decade
Congrats to Manny Pacquiao…err…Congressman Pacquiao for being named Fighter of the Year by the Boxing Writers Association of America. This is the third time that Pacquiao has won the honor. In addition, his trainer, Freddie Roach was named Trainer of the Year.
Pacquiao was also named Fighter of the Decade an award in my opinion was well deserved as well.
Victories over Oscar De La Hoya, Ricky Hatton, and Miguel Cotto just to name a few shows that “The Pacman” never backs down from a challenge.
His greatest challenge lies in a potential fight with Floyd Mayweather. The question is will it happen??
Mums the Word
Negotiations for the Mayweather/Pacquiao megafight have been ongoing but there is an apparent “gag order” in place as neither camp is discussing how things are moving along.
Freddie Roach recently commented that he is “staying out of it” and will wait to see if the fight happens.
Bob Arum, Pacquiao’s promoter did come out and say that Pacquiao has agreed to blood testing within 14 days of the fight. This is a great sign because this was a demand of Mayweather’s that seemingly broke off negotiations earlier this year.
If Pacquiao has agreed to the blood testing within 14 days, shouldn’t it be a matter of time before the fight is announced? The split of the money doesn’t seem to be an issue and if the drug testing is close to being resolved, the only other issue to be discussed is the venue.
I don’t want to sound too optimistic but maybe this fight will happen in November! Boxing fans can only hope.
Looks Like Vegas
The venue for a potential Mayweather/Pacquiao showdown as been a hot topic recently and while Jerry Jones, owner of the Dallas Cowboys has been pushing hard for the fight to be Dallas, it looks more and more like the fight will be in Las Vegas.
Honestly, I never thought Dallas stood a chance no matter how much money Jones threw at the promoters. The lure of Las Vegas is just too much.
When you think big fight, you think Las Vegas and as Bob Arum stated, Vegas brings in all of the “high-rollers”.
Personally a fight in Dallas would be cool because it would give boxing fans that may not normally get an opportunity to attend a megafight like this to attend. 50,000 people watched the Pacquiao/Clottey fight I’m sure that many more would come to Dallas to see Mayweather/Pacquiao.
Having the fight in Vegas means ticket prices are much higher and there is less capacity. The fight would truly only be able to be seen live by “high-rollers”. That’s unfortunate but as they say money talks.
Cotto Never Left
I found it very funny that all of the boxing “experts” were saying that Miguel Cotto was washed up after being pummeled by Manny Pacquiao. The man is only 29-years-old and lost to the pound-for-pound king of boxing (Pacquiao) and a cheater in Antonio Margarito. Who knows, if Margarito’s gloves weren’t loaded, Cotto probably would have won that fight.
Cotto answered his critics with an impressive 9th round TKO of Yuri “The Rabbi” Foreman in front of a crowd of 20,000 plus at Yankee Stadium.
Give Foreman credit for hanging in there after it seemed he injured his knee pretty bad in the 7th round but the fight was never in doubt. Cotto dominated from the start in what was a huge victory for the Puerto Rican star. Props also need to go out to Cotto’s new trainer the legendary Emanuel Steward who had Cotto more than prepared for this fight.
There is talk of Cotto fighting Pacquiao again if Pacquiao and Mayweather can’t make a deal but the first fight was so lopsided, who would want to see that again? Mayweather would probably never fight Cotto so that’s out.
Matching Cotto up with Sergio Martinez or Andre Berto would be intriguing but I would love to see a rematch with Antonio Margarito. Margarito’s victory over Cotto is tarnished after he was caught cheating in his fight against Shane Mosley. Cotto deserves an opportunity to prove (fair and square) that he’s better than Margarito.
The headlines read “Cotto’s Back” but in my opinion, he never left.
Upcoming Fights
Here is a list of some upcoming fights to look out for:
Andre Ward vs. Allan Green for Ward’s WBA Super Middleweight Championship (Super Six World Boxing Classic) June 19th
Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. vs. John Duddy Middleweight Bout June 26th
Timothy Bradley vs. Luis Carlos Abregu Welterweight Bout July 17th
Juan Manuel Marquez vs. Juan Diaz for Marquez’s Ring/WBA/WBO Lightweight Championship July 31st (rematch)
