Cleveland Browns 2010 NFL Draft Picks
Cleveland Browns
Needs Analysis: The Browns masterfully waited for McCoy at No. 85. In the meantime, they selected the top corner, Joe Haden, a bit of a reach at safety, T.J. Ward, and an underrated running back, Montario Hardesty, to replace Jamal Lewis. Don't be surprised if safety Larry Asante, taken in the fifth round, gives Ward a run for playing time. With nine picks, the Browns satisfied all of their needs and should be ready for camp.
Pick Player Pos Ht Wt College Grade* Fan Pick* Watch
Round 1, Pick 7 (7) Joe Haden CB 5'11" 193 Florida 8.6 11
Video
Pick Analysis: Haden gives the team a legitimate "shutdown" corner. He's an instinctive playmaker with exceptional cover skills. Though he didn't blaze a sizzling 40-time at the National Scouting Combine, he has enough speed and quickness to stay with receivers on the edge. He also has a knack for making plays on the ball down the field. With the Browns' secondary in desperate need of a talent infusion, selecting Haden was the right call.
Round 2, Pick 6 (38) T.J. Ward FS 5'10" 211 Oregon 6.1 --
Video
Pick Analysis: The Browns surprise many with their decision to bypass Jimmy Clausen and Colt McCoy to take T.J Ward. The hard-hitting safety has solid overall skills, and gives the Browns a legitimate playmaker in the middle of the field. While the pick will be roundly criticized, the move to address their porous secondary is a classic case of a team filling their biggest needs through the draft.
Round 2, Pick 27 (59) (From Cowboys through Eagles) Montario Hardesty RB 6'0" 225 Tennessee 6.8 --
Video
Pick Analysis: The Browns trade up to grab a big, physical runner in Montario Hardesty. He has outstanding speed, and his underrated cutback skills make him a solid fit in the Browns' scheme. With Jerome Harrison lacking the size to be the lone back, Hardesty should receive a high volume of carries as a key reserve.
Round 3, Pick 21 (85) (From Patriots through Raiders) Colt McCoy QB 6'1" 216 Texas 7.6 --
Video
Pick Analysis: The Browns finally grab their quarterback of the future with the selection of Colt McCoy. Though most expected the team to grab him in the second round, the Browns successfully gambled that he would fall through the cracks and picked him up with the 85th pick. As an athletic thrower with good accuracy, McCoy is a good fit in the Browns' west-coast offense and could develop into a solid starter in time.
Round 3, Pick 28 (92) (From Jets) Shawn Lauvao OT 6'2" 315 Arizona State 2.4 --
Video
Pick Analysis: The Browns pick up Shawn Lauvao to provide depth to their interior line. The Arizona State standout has solid overall skills, and is an instinctive player capable of playing multiple positions along the line. Given his savvy and versatility, he gives the Browns an intriguing young player to develop.
Round 5, Pick 29 (160) (From Jets) Larry Asante SS 6'0" 212 Nebraska 6.7 --
Video
Round 6, Pick 8 (177) Carlton Mitchell WR 6'3" 215 South Florida 7.1 --
Video
Pick Analysis: The Browns pick up a dynamic receiver with immense potential in Carlton Mitchell. As an athletic pass catcher with good running skills, Mitchell is a good fit in the Browns' version of the west coast offense. He could emerge as a big-time playmaker for the team as a rookie.
Round 6, Pick 17 (186) (From Panthers) Clifton Geathers DE 6'7" 299 South Carolina 3.3 --
Video
Pick Analysis: Geathers is a huge kid, with some of the longest arms ever. Given his frame and feet, I would like to project him as an offensive tackle. The Browns are looking at him as the five-technique, in a 3-4 defense. He has great size for the position, but he needs to learn how to use his hands and disengage from blocks.
