Tennessee Titans 2010 NFL Draft Pikcs
Tennessee Titans
Needs Analysis: The Titans had a solid draft that met all their needs, except at outside linebacker. If Keith Bulluck comes back, then they will be fine. Derrick Morgan was a no-brainer in the first round and was a safer pick than Pierre-Paul, who went one pick earlier. WR Damian Williams reminds me of Donald Driver and will be a factor by midseason. The most interesting selection may be safety Myron Rolle in the sixth round. Some day he will be a doctor, but he is going after his football career right now, despite many NFL people questioning his passion for the game.
Pick Player Pos Ht Wt College Grade* Fan Pick* Watch
Round 1, Pick 16 (16) Derrick Morgan DE 6'3" 266 Georgia Tech 8.5 15
Video
Pick Analysis: The Titans fill their biggest need with the addition of Derrick Morgan. As a high-motor pass rusher with a quick first step, Morgan gives the Titans a legitimate threat off the edge. Additionally, he is a stout player against the run, and shows the potential to be an effective every down defensive end. Given the losses of Jevon Kearse and Kyle Vanden Bosch, Morgan should play a big role for the Titans as a rookie.
Round 3, Pick 13 (77) Damian Williams WR 6'1" 197 Southern Cal 7.3 --
Video
Pick Analysis: The Titans attempt to address their depth at wide receiver by adding the polished Damian Williams. The former Southern California standout is an outstanding pass catcher with good receiving skills. Additionally, he is a good punt returner with big-play skills in the open field. Given his versatility and solid overall skills, Williams is a good value pick at this point.
Round 3, Pick 33 (97) (Compensatory selection) Rennie Curran LB 5'11" 235 Georgia 5.0 --
Video
Pick Analysis: The Titans select the ultra-productive Rennie Curran to fill a void at linebacker. Though he is considered diminutive by pro standards, his outstanding instincts and awareness allow him to compensate for his size deficiency. With the Titans in desperate need of more playmakers on defense, Curran could step into a big role as a rookie.
Round 4, Pick 6 (104) (From Seahawks) Alterraun Verner CB 5'10" 189 UCLA 4.1 --
Pick Analysis: The Titans trade away a pair of valuable backups (RB LenDale White and DT Kevin Vickerson) to the Seahawks to nab Alteraun Verner. The former Bruin has solid overall skills, and is a crafty ball hawk in the back end. He should compete for time as a nickel or dime corner in the Titans' secondary.
Round 5, Pick 17 (148) Robert Johnson DB 6'2" 200 Utah -- --
Pick Analysis: The Titans attempt to upgrade their depth at cornerback with the selection of Robert Johnson. The team needs to identify a few key backups in the back end, and Johnson will get every opportunity to earn a spot in the rotation during training camp.
Round 6, Pick 7 (176) (From Seahawks) Rusty Smith QB 6'5" 230 Florida Atlantic -- --
Pick Analysis: With three veteran quarterbacks on the roster, the Titans take Florida Atlantic's Rusty Smith as a young signal-caller to develop for the future. Smith has good size, and a strong arm, and will have time to ply his trade in Tennessee behind Vince Young and Kerry Collins.
Round 6, Pick 38 (207) (Compensatory selection) Myron Rolle SS 6'2" 215 Florida State 5.6 --
Video
Pick Analysis: Myron Rolle is a huge bargain for the Titans with the last pick of the sixth round. His intelligence goes without saying, but he brings a core competence to his playing the secondary. He's a little tight in the hips, and he didn't make a lot of big plays, but he's solid and dependable.
Round 7, Pick 15 (222) Marc Mariani WR 6'0" 185 Montana -- --
Pick Analysis: The Titans continue their annual habit of taking a receiver late in the draft by selecting Montana's Marc Mariani. Mariani will likely start out as a special teams contributor, but has the receiving skill and athleticism to eventually work his way into the wideout rotation.
Round 7, Pick 34 (241) (Compensatory selection) David Howard DT 6'3" 298 Brown -- --
Pick Analysis: Howard is a strong player, with a lot of upside. He functions best as a run-stopper at this stage, but has good natural ability. Noted Titans defensive line coach Jim Washburn will work to develop Howard's raw skills.
