New England Patriots 2010 NFL Draft Picks
New England Patriots
Needs Analysis: The Patriots used 12 draft picks to build up the back end of their roster and get younger. This is the third year in a row they took a corner high in the draft. The release of Adalius Thomas suggests second-round pick Jermaine Cunningham fits significantly into their plans at outside linebacker. In the Patriots' 3-4 looks, second-rounder Brandon Spikes will play. Three University of Florida players were drafted by New England, continuing the pipeline from Urban Meyer's program. The Patriots made a real smart move in the fifth round taking punter Zoltan Mesko, who is left-footed and excelled at dropping punts inside the 20-yard line.
Pick Player Pos Ht Wt College Grade* Fan Pick* Watch
Round 1, Pick 27 (27) (From Cowboys) Devin McCourty CB 5'11" 193 Rutgers 8.0 --
Video
Pick Analysis: After wheeling and dealing down the draft board, the Patriots pick up the versatile Devin McCourty. The former Rutgers standout gives the team a dynamic cover man and special teams player. Although he won't be counted on to step right in as a starter, McCourty should excel as a sub-defender/special teamer in his rookie season. The Patriots are routinely chastised for their willingness to trade away picks, but it's hard to dispute their ability to find gems at the right value.
Round 2, Pick 10 (42) (From Bears through Buccaneers and Raiders) Rob Gronkowski TE 6'6" 264 Arizona 8.2 --
Video
Pick Analysis: The Patriots aggressively traded up a few spots to nab Rob Gronkowski. The big, athletic tight end has exceptional tools, and is one of the few complete players at the position available in the draft. With the offseason departures of Ben Watson and Chris Baker, the Patriots needed to add a playmaker at tight end, and Gronkowski has the talent to blossom into a Pro Bowler.
Round 2, Pick 21 (53) Jermaine Cunningham DE 6'3" 266 Florida 7.2 --
Pick Analysis: The Patriots add the unheralded Jermaine Cunningham in the middle of the second round. Though he spent most of his career playing in the shadows of a host of all-stars at Florida, he is a solid player with the versatile skill set that the Patriots prefer in their hybrid players. He gives Bill Belichick another option to use in his outside linebacker rotation.
Round 2, Pick 30 (62) (From Vikings through Texans) Brandon Spikes LB 6'3" 249 Florida 7.4 --
Video
Pick Analysis: Bill Belichick loves to add "football players" to his roster, and Brandon Spikes is an old-school middle linebacker with the skills to excel as a pro. Although his slow 40 time dropped him down some draft boards, his outstanding production throughout his collegiate career is indicative of his superior instincts and awareness. The Patriots needed to add talent to their linebacker corps, and Spikes gives them a young player with immense potential.
Round 3, Pick 26 (90) (From Cowboys) Taylor Price WR 6'0" 204 Ohio 7.3 --
Pick Analysis: The Patriots add Taylor Price to bolster the speed of their receiving corps. The former Ohio star has outstanding athleticism, and is a big-play threat with the ball in his hands. Though he hasn't consistently played to his talent, his potential makes him an intriguing prospect worthy of consideration at this point.
Round 4, Pick 15 (113) (From 49ers through Broncos) Aaron Hernandez TE 6'2" 245 Florida 7.4 --
Video
Pick Analysis: The Patriots continue to raid the campus of the University of Florida with the addition of Aaron Hernandez. As a savvy pass catcher with outstanding athleticism, Hernandez gives the team an ideal H-Back to use in its multiple tight end formations.
Round 5, Pick 19 (150) (From Texans) Zoltan Mesko P 6'4" 240 Michigan 3.1 --
Video
Pick Analysis: The Patriots take the first punter off the board with the selection of Zoltan Mesko. The former Michigan standout has a big leg, and his ability to alter field position makes him a valued commodity at this point.
Round 6, Pick 36 (205) (Compensatory selection) Ted Larsen OL 6'2" 304 North Carolina State 4.9 --
Video
Pick Analysis: The Patriots pick up a heady center in the late stages of the draft with the selection of Ted Larsen. Although he isn't regarded as a great athlete, his instincts and awareness allow him to mask his deficiencies in a short area. He will provide good depth to the interior of the Patriots' offensive line.
Round 7, Pick 1 (208) (From Rams through Redskins) Thomas Welch OL 6'6" 307 Vanderbilt 3.4 --
Video
Pick Analysis: The Patriots further bolster their depth along the offensive line with the selection of Thomas Welch. The former tight end-turned-tackle is raw in several aspects of his game, but has the potential to develop into a solid swing tackle prospect. He will need to earn a spot on the Patriots' roster as a backup.
Round 7, Pick 40 (247) (Compensatory selection) Brandon Deaderick DE 6'4" 314 Alabama 4.6 --
Round 7, Pick 41 (248) (Compensatory selection) Kade Weston DT 6'5" 317 Georgia -- --
Pick Analysis: Wade is a development prospect that has a chance because of his height, weight and speed. His athleticism is enticing and the Patriots will look to mold him in their system over the next couple years.
Round 7, Pick 43 (250) (Compensatory selection) Zac Robinson QB 6'2" 214 Oklahoma State 4.4 --
Video
Pick Analysis: Someone had to be throwing the ball to Dez Bryant in college, right? Well that man was Zac Robinson. Robinson struggles at time with his accuracy, but has a lively arm and will compete with Brian Hoyer for a backup spot in New England.
