Indianapolis Colts 2010 NFL Draft Picks
Indianapolis Colts
Needs Analysis: Polian was delighted when DE Jerry Hughes fell right to him at No. 31. Hughes is in the mold of Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis, and he will see lots of action right away. Polian told me linebacker Pat Angerer fits the mold of the Colts linebackers. Indy entered the draft with only four corners on the roster, and with all the nickel and dime defense it plays, Kevin Thomas was a good pick in the third round. Guard Jacques McClendon was a bit of a surprise in the fourth round, especially with his college teammate, the versatile Chris Scott, still on the board.
Pick Player Pos Ht Wt College Grade* Fan Pick* Watch
Round 1, Pick 31 (31) Jerry Hughes DE 6'2" 255 TCU 8.2 --
Video
Pick Analysis: The Colts' fortify their pass rush with the addition of Jerry Hughes. Although Indianapolis retains Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis, it still needed another rusher to alleviate some of the pressure on the duo. In Hughes, the Colts get a hard-working edge rusher with outstanding quickness and burst. The Colts have the luxury of slowly integrating Hughes into the lineup, and can groom him into a starter after a year or two.
Round 2, Pick 31 (63) Pat Angerer LB 6'0" 235 Iowa 6.2 --
Video
Pick Analysis: The Colts add a solid all-around player in Pat Angerer. The former Iowa standout was very productive as a collegian, and shows outstanding instincts for the position. Though he isn't over athletic, he plays faster than he tests and is an underrated playmaker. He gives the Colts much-needed depth.
Round 3, Pick 30 (94) Kevin Thomas CB 6'0" 192 Southern Cal 7.1 --
Video
Pick Analysis: The Colts add depth to their secondary with the addition of Kevin Thomas. The Southern California standout had been one of the stars of the pre-draft season, and his intriguing skill set could flourish in the Colts' zone-based scheme.
Round 4, Pick 31 (129) Jacques McClendon OG 6'2" 305 Tennessee -- --
Pick Analysis: The Colts add depth to their interior line with the selection of Jacques McClendon. In selecting the former Tennessee standout, the Colts are hoping to find a young player to develop for a bigger role in the near future. This is another move by the Colts to solidify their depth on the offensive line.
Round 5, Pick 31 (162) Brody Eldridge TE 6'5" 261 Oklahoma 2.0 --
Video
Pick Analysis: The Colts just picked the best blocking TE in the entire draft. Eldridge started games at center, guard, and tight end this season for the Sooners. In fact, he was an all-conference FB as well. He's nasty, he's tough and he will upgrade the Colts' run game and be a tremendous complement to Dallas Clark.
Round 7, Pick 31 (238) Ricardo Mathews DT 6'3" 294 Cincinnati -- --
Pick Analysis: The Colts like to develop stout run stuffers at the defensive tackle position, and Mathews' best attribute is his ability to gobble up running backs up the middle. He will work to try and earn a backup spot in training camp.
Round 7, Pick 33 (240) (Compensatory selection) Kavell Conner LB 6'0" 242 Clemson 2.0 --
Video
Pick Analysis: Conner will have to overcome his lack of height at the pro level, but possesses the speed and toughness to potentially contribute on special teams right away. The Colts have done well with undersized linebackers in the past, and Conner plays bigger than his stature would indicate.
Round 7, Pick 39 (246) (Compensatory selection) Ray Fisher DB 5'9" 185 Indiana -- --
Pick Analysis: The Colts lacked an explosive return man last year, and Fisher has the ability to become a difference-maker in that capacity. He will certainly compete for the job in training camp.
