Headlinin': Les Miles decides to kill the clock, 48 hours too late
• Upon further review, we should have done the completely obvious thing that everyone in the stadium and watching at home was screaming for us to do. After reviewing the epic chaos at the end of Saturday's 16-14 win over Tennessee, LSU coach Les Miles admitted Monday that the Tigers should have spiked the ball to kill the clock after quarterback Jordan Jefferson was stopped at the one-yard line with 25 seconds left and no timeouts. "There was a try to not give up a down," Miles said at his weekly media luncheon. "That was a mistake. The clock-it call was absolutely the best call at the time. What happened at the end of the game is my responsibility. 'Let's clock it' needed to be said. As soon as we were without a timeout, clocking the ball should have taken place before (considering) down and distance. Clock-it should have been called."
Good to see Miles owning the gaffe instead of passing the buck again, though he also took credit for personally calling the sweep that Stevan Ridley took in for the game-winning touchdown after officials had restored order. For Tiger fans who have waiting two years for Miles to take the keys away from offensive coordinator Gary Crowton, that sounds like a glimmer of hope. But only a glimmer. [b] I wanna be I wanna be like Nick. With the walls caving in all around him, Mark Richt had Georgia go all-out Monday in "a very high-spirited, high-contact scrimmage," the first time in his 10-year tenure the Bulldogs have opened a practice week in full pads. Richt also said he'd personally lead the team onto the field for the first time in Saturday's casket match with Tennessee, in response to a radio caller's suggestion that he come out "clapping and high-fiving our players" like Nick Saban. [Atlanta Journal-Constitution]
• Tell us it was a big dog, at least. North Texas receiver Tyler Stradford will miss two games following surgery for injuries he suffered trying to escape a dog at his apartment complex last week. UNT coach Todd Dodge said Stratford was running a way from the dog when he "jumped a fence, landed on a piece of lawn furniture and had a piece of pipe puncture four inches into his chest." He's expected to be back on Oct. 30, but seriously man, take all the time you need with that.
