Short history of the UFC

Fri May 25, 2012 2:57 pm by Anonymous

What is MMA and the UFC?

Originating from the full contact sport of Vale tudo in Brazil, the UFC was created in the United States in 1993 with minimal rules, and was promoted as a competition to determine the most effective marital art for unarmed combat situations.

It wasn't long before the …

Hubble's Highlights, 2000-2001

Post by cool66616 on Tue Jul 13, 2010 2:31 am

A red giant star exploded in the Leptus constellation several thousand years ago. It will continue to vaporize for thousands of years to become a white dwarf. Our Sun faces this fate in five billion years.

Ephemeral Equine
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A column of cosmic matter rises to form the Horsehead Nebula. The densely packed star nursery is located just South of the left-most star in the belt of Orion.

Cosmic Cogs
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Two spiral galaxies spin like cogs in the constellation Hydra. The foreground galaxy's dark matter is made visible by the light of the background galaxy.

Hubble Bubble
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The star BD+602522 is 40 times bigger than the Sun and billows particles into three orbs. The smallest, central Bubble Nebula is six light-years-wide.

Optic Eye
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hubble spied on some of the hottest and most massive stars in the Keyhole Nebula. Fluorescing filamentous gases hold cold particles inside the dark features.

Ocular Apparition
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
All that remains of an exploded Sun-like star in the constellation Gemini is an iris of ejected comet-like objects with light-year-long tails, and an iridescent pupil made from the star's dying breath.

Black Heart Procession
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A topsy-turvy heart of dust blocks the nebulosity of a star 10,000 times brighter than our Sun. The extraordinarily dense cloud will most likely collapse to form a new star.

Better to Burn Out
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A 10-solar-mass star that exploded to become a supernova in 1054 was visible for weeks, even during the day. A pulsar in the Crab Nebula is all that remains, the lower of the two bright objects in the upper left corner.

Spidey Spirograph
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
These intriguingly symmetric remains of a supernova have scientists guessing that an orbiting companion star pulled the exploded star's gases into the shape of this "ant nebula".

Crimson and Clover
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Cold white dust swirls in the whirlpool galaxy, M51, among red-hot hydrogen. The gravity of a nearby galaxy catalyzes star formation in the hydrogen zones.
