Seattle Seahawks 2010 NFL Draft Picks
Seattle Seahawks
Needs Analysis: What's not to like about a team that some would argue got the best left tackle and free safety in the draft in first-rounders Russell Okung and Earl Thomas? They got Golden Tate in the second round, and you know Pete Carroll will be experimenting with using Tate in the Wildcat. Trading for Leon Washington and LenDale White answered the running back situation and allowed them to address strong safety and corner. The best late-round pick was TE Anthony McCoy, who has stiff competition from veterans John Carlson and Chris White. The Seahawks are still looking for more players to raise the level of competition.
Pick Player Pos Ht Wt College Grade* Fan Pick* Watch
Round 1, Pick 6 (6) Russell Okung OT 6'5" 307 Oklahoma State 8.7 4
Video
Pick Analysis: Russell Okung becomes Walter Jones' heir apparent on the left side of the offensive line. As a sound technician with outstanding feet and hands, he gives Matt Hasselbeck an exceptional blocker on the blind side. Although the Seahawks still have several voids to fill, they may have solved their biggest issue with the selection of Okung as their new left tackle.
Round 1, Pick 14 (14) (From Broncos) Earl Thomas SS 5'10" 208 Texas 8.7 13
Video
Pick Analysis: The Seahawks add a talented playmaker to the back end of their defense with the selection of Earl Thomas. As an instinctive safety with exceptional range and awareness, Thomas will eliminate some of the big plays that plagued the defense a season ago. Additionally, his exceptional cover skills will allow the Seahawks to creatively use him in their nickel packages as a sub-defender in the slot. Given his multi-faceted skills, Thomas was a sensible pick for a Seahawks team in desperate need of playmakers on both sides of the ball.
Round 2, Pick 28 (60) (From Chargers) Golden Tate WR 5'10" 199 Notre Dame 7.9 --
Video
Pick Analysis: The Seahawks find a talented playmaker for their receiving corps. Although Tate has been deemed too short to be a proto-typical No.1 receiver, his outstanding running skills make him a special talent worthy of a key role in Seattle's offense. In addition, he gives the Seahawks another player capable of producing points in the return game.
Round 4, Pick 13 (111) (From Titans) Walter Thurmond CB 5'11" 189 Oregon 5.2 --
Pick Analysis: The Seahawks pick up a talented cover man in Walter Thurmond. The former Duck missed part of the season recovering from a knee injury, but could develop into a starting caliber corner when he returns to health. Pete Carroll's familiarity with Thurmond might have been the deciding factor in selecting the former Duck.
Round 4, Pick 29 (127) (From Jets through Eagles) E.J. Wilson DE 6'4" 286 North Carolina 2.0 --
Video
Pick Analysis: The Seahawks add a talented edge player with the selection of E.J. Wilson. The former North Carolina standout has good overall skills, and gives the Seahawks another pass rusher to develop in their rotation. Wilson didn't garner a lot of attention throughout his career, but scouts have been buzzing about his potential throughout the pre-draft process.
Round 5, Pick 2 (133) (From Lions) Kam Chancellor FS 6'3" 231 Virginia Tech 6.0 --
Video
Pick Analysis: The Seahawks get a big, athletic safety in Kam Chancellor. The Virginia Tech standout is adept at playing in the box, and his combination of size and speed make him a strong candidate to emerge as a key contributor on special teams.
Round 6, Pick 16 (185) (From Titans) Anthony McCoy TE 6'4" 259 Southern Cal 7.7 --
Video
Pick Analysis: Pete Carroll just selected his first USC Trojan in McCoy. He had a third-round grade from most NFL teams prior to off-field issues. The sixth round is excellent value for an athletic tight end, who can stretch the defense. Carroll needs to keep him in a structured environment to get the most out of him.
Round 7, Pick 29 (236) (From Jets) Dexter Davis DE 6'1" 244 Arizona State 2.4 --
Video
Pick Analysis: Given the losses of Corey Redding and Patrick Kerney in the offseason, the Seahawks nab Davis late. He has good speed and is explosive off the line, but is pretty much just a third-down specialist off the edge at this point due to his size.
Round 7, Pick 38 (245) (Compensatory selection) Jameson Konz WR 6'3" 227 Kent State -- --
Pick Analysis: After a somewhat nondescript college career at Kent State, Konz jumped into the draft conversation with one of the best pro day workouts of any prospect in the 2010 class. A tremendous athlete, Konz will have to work hard at refining his skills to stick in Seattle.
